Hard Knock Radio is 94.1 FM KPFA's daily drivetime Talk Show for the Hip Hop Generation. It features hosts Davey D, Weyland Southon, Anita Johnson and Tsadae Abeba Neway who hit the air everyday Mon-Fri at 4pm offering news, views, breaks, and beats.
What We Do?
We feature in-depth interviews and profiles with elected officials, community leaders, activists, authors, Hip Hop artists and musicians. We give voice to community concerns and offer a unique forum to explore issues relevant to the Hip Hop/urban community. We've covered a variety of subjects like; Hip Hop Appreciation Week, The War on Terrorism,The Prison Industrial Complex, Asian/ Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Domestic Violence, Teen Pregnacy and the Middle East Crisis to name a few.
In this day and age of media consolidation HKR strives to be a voice for the community. We take very seriously, our commitment to give access to community groups and activists who are trying to make a difference and bring about meaningful social change. Who Has Rolled Through?
Everyday HKR features exciting guests who are movers and shakers in their respective fields. Our philosophy is to Give the People What They Need and make sure are audiences gets to hear directly from today's newsmakers. Some of our recent guests have been; KRS-One, Russell Simmons, Saul Williams, Sarah Jones, Yuri Kochiyama, Rev Al Sharpton, Mystic, Cornel West, Ben Harper, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Tavis Smiley, Sista Souljah, Blackalicious, Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Dilated Peoples, Kool Moe Dee, Afrika Bambaataa, The Coup, Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, Paris, Chuck D and Reverend Jesse Jackson to name a few.
HKR Accomplishments
Hard Knock Radio tries to stay involved with community events and activities. We do live broadcasts, Host panel discussion, host debate forums and concerts etc, Here's a round up of some of the things we have recently done.
co-produced the Mumia Abul Jamal spoken word CD '175 Progress Drive'
Produced 4 spoken word/freestyle CDs called Smoking Verbs.
co-sponsored the Bay Area's Hip Hop Film Festival in July 2002.
co-sponsored and co-hosted the Sept 7 2002, Power to the Peaceful Festival at Golden Gate Park with Michael Franti and Spearhead, Mystic and KRS-One.
Responded to a need and request from a number of prison reform groups and helped develop a monthly radio segment called 'Critical Resistance Radio' which addresses needs and concerns of the inmate population.This excellent segment is hosted by members of Critical Resistance
Recently Hard Knock Radio was voted as the Best Radio Show in the SF Bay Area by the East Bay Express newspaper.
