Bad news for Stanley Howse aka Flesh N Bones of Bones Thugs and Harmony.. This past Friday he was sentenced to 11 years to California State Prison system.. His sentencing stems from him threatening a friend last December with an AK-47..[wow some friend]. Flesh's lawyers told reporters that the sentencing was a good and fair one and that Flesh was pleased with the judge.. Had the judge decided to exercise the normal sentencing guidelines, Flesh would've received 19 years..Since Flesh is already serving time, he is expected to get back out within 5 years for good behavior. Flesh fans need not fret, because they will have an opportunity to check out his upcoming album '5th Dog Let Loose' which will be out on October 5th
Will Smith The Fresh Prince is getting ready to make waves in the literary world.. The lyrics to his hit song 'Just The Two of Us' are being made into a 32 page children's book. Folks may recall this charming song that depicts the relationship between a father and his son. A lot of people like to dis Will and say the song was corny, but to me it contained an important message and hopefully it inspires fathers and would be fathers to do the right thing... While Will gets ready for his book to drop, he will also be featured in a movie called 'The Legend of Bagger Vance' which is due to hit the screens on November 3. The movie is being directed by Robert Redford and will also star Matt Damon and Charlize Theron. Early word on the film is that it should win a couple of Oscars.. Will wait and see...
I just wanted to say that I think it's real sad that hip hop fans moreover
music fans can't be opened minded enough to appreciate it when an artist
tries to take things to another level. Artist are constantly trying to grow
by experimenting to take their music to a higher level so they can expand
them selves and their audience. Artist themselves don't have the same
privilege to be that closed minded, their too busy trying to sell records,
and they know their fans well enough to know what they will buy and won't
buy, but when they finally do get a chance to do something different for a
change and the audience turns their back on them, that has to be the
ultimate insult.
Here's to always trying to find the next level!
Peace,
Marlo

I feel you on the mos def steelo.
when I saw Bernie on stage, I freaked.
I tried to explain who he was to some heads,
but people don't even know, and weren't feeling it.
what? BW started the carreers of Dr. Dre, Ice Cube,
and all the other P-Funk MC's. He was the first person
to play a bassline on a synthesizer, revolutionizing the
way music is made. I can't believe people were fronting on that.
hmmmmmmmmmm.

Hi D.
That's funny, that story 'bout Mos Def, brings back memories from when I saw The Disposable Heroes of Hiphopricy in The Hague, Holland, they did an incredible show and halfway through blew up the speakers, and instead of having us leave disappointed they just put up an incredible acoustic jazz set, full with poetry and it was just amazing, I really cannot think of that many acts who could do a thing like that, it was a whole lot better than Tim Dog coming on stage in Rotterdam 3 hours late only to stop a show after 15 minutes because the people jumped too hard so the needle of the record player would bounce too much so there wasn't any music, any ways,
all the best,
Henk in Indonesia.....
It's funny what was said about Mos Def's set because he just performed last night here in Atlanta & heads started leaving early as well. A number of people I talked to also left early. I definitely agree that maybe this would have been good for a funkjazz club type of event. Mos & his band don't have that chemistry yet like the Roots does in terms of sound. I've seen Mos perform before with a DJ & Talib Kweli & the shit was off the hook, but the chemistry with the live band is not entirely there yet. Just my opinion.
JayForce Folks who are New York are now able to head on over to the Brooklyn Museum and check out the highly anticipated Hip Hop Nation: Roots, Rhymes and Rage exhibition.. This is the first stop of a National Tour and it looks to be an incredible exhibit.. Visitors will be treated to hundreds of pieces of Hip Hop artifacts ranging from old play list from Public Enemy to an old hat from DJ Kool Herc and tennis shoes from Run DMC. The exhibit is divided into sections that highlight Hip Hop's four elements which include emceeing, deejaying, dance and graffiti. It depicts several eras within the evolution of Hip Hop culture including The Block Party era from 1970-1980, Hip Hop's Golden Age from 1988-93 where groups like Public Enemy, Queen Latifah and others reigned. It also showcases the rise of Gangsta Rap and the eventual main streaming of Hip Hop culture. The Hip Hop Nation Exhibit will be at the Brooklyn Museum until the end of the year and will feature lectures, performances and films..
Rome and Jewels is a new play/dance theater piece which is about to open up at UCLA's Schoenberg Hall. It is being described as a Hip Hop Opera that is based upon the Shakespeare classic Romeo & Juliette. This is the brain child of Philadelphia native Rennie Harris who is a choreographer, dancer and the founder of a company called Puremovement. In a recent interview with the LA Times, he noted that Shakespeare and Hip Hop are similar in terms of their widespread appeal. He skillfully uses the text of Romeo and Juliet and adapts it to modern day Hip Hop vernacular. The actors rap their lines. And there are two rival gangs called the Caps and the Monster Q's.. They also incorporate some innovative break dance/b-boy dance sequences. Romes and Jewels first premiered in June of this year in Philadelphia and will touch down in LA on September 27 and 28th at UCLA's Schoenberg Hall.. 310-825-2101
Fans of ODB [Ole Dirty Bastard], look out cause homeboy is getting ready to get out of the Pasadena based Impact House drug facility. He's been there for the past few month serving out a sentence for parole violation. Thus far his progress has been favorable so now he will be granted 12 hour supervised passes to do fellowship work.. Hopefully he's got his substance abuse problem licked...
In other news watch out for the Alkaholiks. They are set to return to the scene with a new album entitled 'XO' which will feature Busta Rhymes, Xzibit and Kurupt. They are also hooking up with Eminem and also trying to get singer Gwen Stefani of the group No Doubt..
Everyone's favorite Hip Hop gangsta Mr. Suge Knight is stepping up and trying to help those who are incarcerated. Proceeds from Death Row's upcoming album 'Too Gangsta For The Radio' will be set aside for a special cause. Suge has set up a 'Death Row Prisoner Appeal Fund' to assist those who have been wrongly incarcerated. Each year Suge and Death Row records will make funding available for folks within the Federal and one person within the state system to mount an appeal, receive help in obtaining services of an attorney and support to represent their case before an appeals board... In their press release it reads;
"Death Row records knows that real and serious problems exist in the US prison system.. Through this annual funding, in some small but positive way, the fund will help change this. Importantly it offers hope and the fact that people from the streets have not been forgotten. Death Row started on the street, built up from the street and will always be about the street'. The Bay Area was treated to not one but two days of the Word of Mouth Tour featuring Dilated Peoples, Supernatural, The Beat Junkies, DJ Shortkut and Jurassic 5.. Both nights were sold out at San Francisco's historic Filmore Theater and both shows were off the hook.. I caught Jurassic 5's set last night.. {I had no idea the show started at 7pm.. Imagine my surprise when I walked in at 10:15 and found out I was late.. } People were ranting and raving about this incredible DJ exhibition put on by DJ Shortkut and Cut Chemist.. Apparently Shortkut is into reggae and had the crowd rocking.. People were going on and on about how Dilated came through and totally wrecked it..People were also buzzing about Supernatural and his ability to rhyme off the dome about anything and everything.. And of course the Beat Junkies came through and held it down.. Unfortunately I missed all that.. But the J5 more then made up for it...Group members Charli2NA, Marc 7, Akil and Zaakir showed us exactly what Hip Hop is all bout
It was an incredible set. It took me back to what Hip Hop had started out to be.. dope performances, innovative rhyme skills, a skilled deejay and crisp clear sound that allowed you to hang on and savor every word.. The Jurassic 5 complimented their performance with interlude that showcased DJ Numark and DJ Cut Chemist. They left the capacity crowd in a frenzy. Jurassic's set also included a dance number from an unknown male/female team who came through and started off by doing a big band swing number. They then progressed and changed up and began doing B-Boying and uprock moves and later incorporated pop locking, strutting and break dance moves. The dance routine really brought the J5 set to another level..
However, it was the grand finale that took the cake. Jurassic 5 invited Souls of Mischief who were in the audience, Lyrics Born from the Quannum MCs, Dilated Peoples and Supernatural onto the stage for an off the hook, freestyle session. Everybody was on point as the crowd cheered enthusiastically for each emcee who blessed the mic. It was at this point Supernatural who was last to rock, ripped it. He did this freestyle rhyme which included him introducing every single person stage. When he finished the crowd went completely bananas while all other emcees in the place sat back and took notes. All of the performers remained on stage after the house lights came on to shake and sign autographs. Everyone leaving the venue was given a commemorative Jurassic 5 poster. Hip Hop was alive and well during the Word of Mouth show. Big Props to everyone for a job well done..
Bad news for Drag On of the Ruff Ryders crew. He was arrested the other night and charged with assault. According to news sources, Drag On got into an altercation with his limo driver. In an interview with MTV, he explained that his limo driver while enroute from the airport started calling him racist names. Initially Drag On let it slide, but when the limo driver continued and then got into his face, Drag On let loose. Unfortunately, name calling does not allow punches to be thrown so he was arrested after the limo driver reported the incident.. We'll keep you posted on what happens with this..
Folks who got a chance to peep out the Lyricist Lounge Tour are in for a treat when they get the album, Lyricist Lounge Volume 2. It's shaping up to be incredible especially the first single entitled 'Oh No' which will feature Pharaoh Monch, Mos Def and west coast crooner Nate Dogg. A video is being shot in LA. Also featured on the album will be tracks from Snoop Dogg, Redman, Rza, Q-Tip, Macy Gray, Common, dead prez, Rah Digga, Gang Starr, Prodigy and Ghostface Killah..Other artist like Beanie Sigel, MOP, Talib Kweli, Kool G Rap and Dilated Peoples have also agreed to lace this album with tracks. The album will be dropping the same day as Wu-Tang's new album 'W' on November 7th.. That is also election day.. On a side note if you have not registered to vote please consider doing so... Head on over to this website and fill in the forms and do your civic duty... http://www.newvoter.com/entry.asp?x=

It will feature numerous tracks of legendary battles including UTFO vs Roxanne Shante, MC Shan vs KRS-One, Doug E Fresh vs Salt N Pepa [Y'all remember the cut 'Show Stoppa?] Antoinette vs MC Lyte and LL Cool J vs Kool Moe Dee.
