Thursday...June 27 1996 ...Amidst much speculation and rampant rumors KMEL Radio announced its Summer Jam line up this afternoon. Included on this year's ticket will be Tribe Called Quest, Run DMC, LL Cool J, De La Soul, Quad City DJs and Digital Underground. The significance of these groups being announced among the 20 act line up is that it ended all speculation about rap artists not performing at this year's KMEL Summer Jam event. For those who are unfamiliar, KMEL Summer Jam is the station's largest event of the year. For the past 10 years the biggest acts within hip hop and urban music have graced the stages of the Shoreline Amphitheater in the city of Mountainview to perform before 22 thousand people and help KMEL raise money for local Bay Area charities. This has undoubtly been the grand daddy of similar concerts which now take place all around the country... The Summer Jam concert was marred last year when there was an altercation between Too Short's Posse and The Luniz Posse. The result was the event being called off prematurely and the Mountainview PD threatening not to have the concert return. Since then rumors surrounding SJ have been abound, the most popular being that KMEL would not be allowed to include rap acts. This of course would've been a major blow to a concert that has hosted everyone from Ice Cube to Hammer to Naughty By Nature.. Fortunately for it's 10 year anniversary, some of the country's hottest hip hop acts will again grace the stage... However a big question remains regarding the fate of Bay Area local acts like E-40 or Celly Cel who have proven to be among the popular musical icons in this area. Will they be performing or not? Only time will tell. In the meantime expect SJ to be the bomb.... stay tuned for forth coming details.
