***JIGGA LAUNCHES NEW LABEL***
Sean Carter aka Jay-Z continues to blow up the spot. This time he spreads his dynasty with the launch of a new record label called 'Carter Faculty'. The label will be run by Jay Z's cousin Bryant 'Bee High' Biggs and his partner Tyran Smith. Like Roc-A-Fella records it will be distributed through Def Jam Records. Biggs and Smith currently manage Memphis Bleek, but there are no immediate plans to bring him over from Roc-A-Fella. Their first signed act will be Da Ranjahz who made some noise a couple of years ago with a Hip Hop interpolation of the Randy Crawford classic 'Street Life'. Their debut album 'Build and Destroy' is expected to drop in Spring 2001.It should be noted that although Jay-Z established the label, he and Roc-A-Fella chair Damon Dash will have nothing to do with the day to day operations..
***NELLY & JA RULE OBEY THEIR THIRST***
Looks like Nelly and Ja Rule have joined MC Shan, KRS-One, Pete Rock and numerous other rappers in promoting Sprite. Last night at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City, the St Louis and Queens based rappers were on hand to help launch Sprite.com which is a virtual mall for teens. Here young people who drink Sprite will be awarded a form of currency called Rocketcash. At Sprite.com they can use their Rocketcash to shop online. At the launch party Ja Rule and Nelly not only were on hand to help promote the new venture but they also performed some of their hit songs..
***SNOOP DOG VS SNOOP DOG***
There's a promotion war brewing between Death Row Records and Priority records. Death Row has recently issued a Snoop Dog album called 'Dead Man Walking', which has not garnered the affections of Snoop himself. The reason being is that Dead Man Walking is a collection of unreleased songs from Snoop's early days when he was rolling with Death Row. Death Row CEO Suge Knight claimed he released the material because it shows Snoop when he was still 'hungry' and more aggressive on the mic. He maintained it was a good album and that the fans deserve to hear it. On the other hand, while Suge has praised the album, he hasn't offered much personal praise for Snoop himself who he called 'an imposter' and 'fake' in recent interviews.
The contentious situation has not sat well with Snoop who is set to release his third album titled 'The Last Meal' which is on No Limit/Priority Records. According to Death Row's website, Priority Records has issued a warning to major radio stations around the country that should they play anything off the Dead Man Walking album, they can expect not to get any interviews, promotions and advertisements from Snoop and the label. Dead Man Walking is not only seen as a major dis to Snoop but also has the potential to interfere with the promotion of his new album,. There is likely to be confusion in the marketplace.. Death Row apparently does not seem concerned about the radio boycott, They have noted that Dead man Walking is blowing up on the streets.. On a side note, I checked with my radio station and no one gave us any warnings about playing any song off Dead Man Walking..DJs from local college and community stations claimed they wouldn't honor any boycott of Dead Man Walking since they've never gotten any sort of interviews or anything from Snoop. One DJ who wish to remain unnamed noted that he at least got a plaque from Death Row when Snoop was on the label.. so anything he gets from the Dead Man Walking album he will make it a point to play it..
With all that in mind, the big question in everyone's mind is how do the two Snoop Dog albums compare.. I got the Dead Man Walking album..and I have to be honest.. It's not bad. There are some nice cuts on there including..'County Blues' which has the same type of feel and theme as the classic 'Murder Was The Case'. 'Gangsta Walk' which features Daz and Kurupt is head nodding material as is the smoothed out melodic 'Change Gone Come'. Now from what I'm hearing Snoop's Priority/No Limit album 'Last Meal' is supposed to be banging. But if I had to compare his first release 'Back Up Ho' with the Dead Man Walking 'Head Doctor', I would have to give the edge to Head Doctor.. Folks may have to go out and get both albums.. Just don't expect to hear Snoop perform any of the Dead Man Walking cuts in concert anytime soon.
Well it's the day after what has proven to be the closest and strangest election in history. First it was Gore. Then it was Bush. And now its up in the air again. It all comes down to the battle ground state in Florida as to who will win.. And Ralph Nader's Green Party was definitely a factor. While he didn't the nationwide 5% of the vote that he had hoped for., the votes that he did get in key states may have prevented Gore from being President. Even more importantly there were still people who didn't bother to vote.. There were still cats who said their vote would not make a difference. There were still some of us so overwhelmed, so despondent, so disillusioned that we never bothered to participate..What a mistake that was... To those folks, all I can say is that your decision to not partake will impact you for the next 20 years. There will be new Supreme Court appointments.. There will be a ton of new federal judge appointments. This will impact drug laws, civil rights legislation and police accountability issues for years to come.. In Congress, one of the first tasks they will undertake is redistricting various communities..They will look at the census data and then start carving up new Congressional districts. The result may be that the Congress person who you actually grew up knowing and liking may all of a sudden not be in office anymore..The bottom line is that a lot of stuff will definitely go down. Make no mistake...May this past election be a lesson to all those who sat on their asses and never stood up..

Looks like Master P has a little banking trouble. Bank One in Louisiana claims that Master P has not been making payments on a loan he took out for 743,000 bucks.. Hence the bank has now filed a law suit. Last time I spoke to P which was a month and a half ago he told me that his No Limit Empire was doing well. he noted that they had garnered more than 400 million dollars last year.. On the flip side Rap Sheet Magazine editor Darryl James sent out a public letter blasting P for not paying off his advertising bills in spite of his repeated attempts..There had been similar behinds the scenes grumblings that P wasn't paying cats on time. There were also stories accusing P of not paying some of his artists including his brother C-Murder. However, when asked P emphatically denied the allegations.. as did his brother. On the flip side, last year around Christmas Time Master P donated all types of money to a Christmas fund that was used by major radio stations all around the country to grant Holiday Wishes for those in need..Considering P's statements about making major dough, the money owed to Bank One is a drop in the bucket. He's probably doing what many of us do.. He's not making repayment to the bank a major priority. Either its that or P is hella broke and just fronting like he's balling outta control..

One time Hip Hop child protege Chi Ali made history this past weekend when he became the second rapper to appear on the TV show America's Most Wanted. For folks who don't remember, Ali had the hit songs 'Funky Lemonade' and 'Age Ain't Nothing But A Number'. Ali is apparently wanted for the murder of his girlfriend's brother Sean Raymond. According to the reports, Raymond owed Ali 300 bucks and when he didn't get it back, he took Raymond's CD collection. Raymond confronted Chi Ali about this, but nothing was resolved. The pair ran into each other in their Throgs Neck neighborhood which is located in the Bronx. Ali and a friend jumped raymond and then Ali shot him 5 times. This all went down sometime last year. Ali has been on the run ever since.. There are reports that he was hiding out in Atlanta and may have now jetted to North or South Carolina.. In any case its a sad state of affairs for someone who once had a promising career. You would hope and think that a guy like Ali had a few dollars stashed away in the bank so that 300 dollars wouldn't lead to a killing.. As for the Chi Ali being featured on Americas Most Wanted, he was proceeded 11 years ago when rapper Just Ice graced was spotlighted on the show.. Ironically Ice was on the run for spousal abuse a year after he participated in the Stop The Violence Project.

Hip Hop's oldest and largest organization, the Universal Zulu Nation is set to celebrate its 26th Anniversary this weekend [November 10-12] They will be paying tribute to soul music and funk music God fathers, Sly Stone, James Brown, and George Clinton. They will also pay tribute to Hip Hop's seminal figures Kool DJ Herc, Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa.. For those who are unfamiliar with Zulu Nation, they began as an organization founded by Afrika Bambaataa at Stevenson High School in the Bronx. It was simply known as 'The Organization'. Bam who once lived the gang lifestyle and was trying to change his ways was known for reading and staying up on the teachings of Elijah Muhammed and other African American leaders, changed the name to Zulu Nation after watching a movie that told the tale of the well known South African tribe.. Bam was inspired by their resistance to Dutch settlers. As Hip Hop became popular, the group became known as the Mighty Zulu Nation and as later the Universal Zulu Nation.
The story behind the evolution of UZN is significant. back in the days Zulu's struck fear in many who lived outside of their Bronx River Housing Project strong hold. While they gave birth to Hip Hop's first B-Boys and B-Girls, the group for the most part was made up of former gang members. Many of them from the Notorious Black Spades which once reigned terror throughout the Bronx. Bambaataa and other conscious brothers spent a lot of time teaching and preaching and working with Zulu members to bring about positive change. Bam often talks about how he would do simple things like bestow titles like Kings and Queens upon Zulu members. His feeling was that if you treat people like kings and queens they will act like kings and queens in their actions.. Change didn't happen over night, but today the testament to all that hard work is the fact that there are Zulu chapters all over the world. They have come to embrace and preserve Hip Hop's key elements and have exemplified what is often considered Hip Hop's 5th Element-Knowledge. Over the years we have seen what was once considered a 'ruthless gang' evolve' to a group that strived to serve the community. There are all sorts of stories about Zulus ridding their housing projects of drug dealers and many of the older guys spending time mentoring younger people. There are stories about Zulus escorting women to and from their apartments as well as looking out and helping those in need. Its a shame that there hasn't been more of a public celebration and acknowledgment of this organization.. In any case, props to them on their 26th anniversary.. Here's abreak down of this weeknds events..
Afrika Bambaataa and The Universal Zulu Nation announce that the Zulu
Nation's 26th Anniversary will be celebrated this Friday, Saturday, and

Considering that the Zulu Nation stresses peace, positivity, activism, truth seeking and so on, each performer has been asked to keep their routines free of profanity and anything which might offend any race, gender, age group, etc. How often do you find that being a requirement in today's so-called-Hip-Hop (read "Rap") shows? Each artist is performing "for the love" and has waived his/her performance fee in full support of the mission of The Universal Zulu Nation.
For those of you who are not familiar with the Bronx area, The Skate Key, where Zulu will be holding their Friday and Saturday night events, is located within a block or two from the 138th and Grand Concourse train stop on the 4 or 5 train.
