Davey D's FNV Newsletter Send comments, questions and concerns to Davey D ============================================ I mention all this because I recall when Eazy E passed and how shocked everyone was when they discovered that it was a result of AIDS. His death sent shockwaves within the Hip Hop community and helped open people's eyes. His death help shatter the myth of that HIV and AIDS was gay white man's disease. I recall a number of projects jumping off that were designed to target the Hip Hop community and bring vital information about HIV and AIDS and steps on how to prevent the spread. There were two incredible AIDS awareness Hip Hop compilation albums that were produced including 'Stolen Moments' and 'America Is Dying Slowly'. Everyone from Wu-Tang to Organized Konfusion to The Pharcyde to Common, De La Soul and Mobb Deep to name a few, all did insightful heartfelt songs addressing the issues surrounding AIDS. This year groups like Outkast are performing in a World AIDS Day concert called 'Life Beat'. The unfortunate reality is AIDS and HIV has spread so rapidly in our community because of ignorance, irresponsibility and recklessness. Like Eazy E who tragically passed because of his desire to live the fast life, many have forgotten his last haunting words which warned us. Folks may recall this sobering statement read by Eazy E's lawyers days before he passed... "I may not seem like a guy you would pick to preach a sermon. But I feel it is now time to testify because I do have folks who care about me hearing all kinds of stuff about what's up." Eazy E Many of us have forgotten these words. Many of us have reverted back to irresponsible behavior. Many of us have allowed ourselves to remain ignorant to the facts and the results have been devastating.. Every year there is a theme associated with World AIDS Day. One year the theme was 'Force For Change: World AIDS Campaign With Young People', Another year the theme was 'Listen, Learn, Live: World AIDS Campaign with Children and Young People'. This year the theme is 'AIDS : Men Make A Difference'. If you ask me five years after Eazy E's death its an appropriate that should strike a nerve within the ranks of Hip Hop. At a date and time when so many of us are attempting to be pimps playas and macks, we have to take one giant step back and take a long hard look. At a date and time where so many of us have videos oozing with scantily clad women oozing with sex, we have to be cognizant of the type of message we convey to younger cats as well as ourselves. Many of us portray the air about us that suggests its ok for us to creep around and keep one, two or three females on the side while we have our 'main honey at the crib.. We mess around and slip up just once and boom-HIV and then AIDS.. The sad secret we never want to talk about is what happens to so many us behind the walls inside prison. There's some ill things taking place and when cats get out they inadvertently spread the disease not realizing they have been infected. Many of us act like there is no longer a risk in having sex. Many of us have been so into getting our mack on and our sex groove down that we have all but forgotten Eazy E's final words. At the time of his death he was the ultimate mack.. How soon we forget our history. In anycase its up to us brothas to do the right thing. lets keep ourselves informed.. Lets help with the fight to find a cure. Lets get tested and be honest with ourselves. Finally lets set an example for our seeds as well as ourselves and behave responsibly. The rapid spread of this disease in our community is inexcusable and well within our reach and preventing. Hopefully brothas will take this to heart and step up their game. and hold it down.. Keep HIV and AIDS at bay and don't let Eazy E's death be something that happen in vain.. ================================
HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus - a virus that attacks the immune system and stops it from fighting off the germs and viruses that make you sick. It can also lead to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), for which there is no cure. There are only 3 ways to become HIV- positive 1.Through unprotected sex...Sex without a condom 2. From an infected mother to baby. During pregnancy, at birth or through breastfeeding 3. Through contact with infected blood e.g.: By sharing needles or razor blades. This may occur with drug use, tattooing, traditional markings, circumcision, ear-piercing, etc. if the instrument used has infected blood on it. You cannot get aids from . sneezing, swimming holding hands, tears, saliva, living together, kissing or hugging, being close to someone with AIDS, toilet seats, dancing, eating food prepared by someone with AIDS, donating blood, mosquitoes, pets, moths or bedbugs swimming pools and baths, door handles and rails, sharing cups, mugs, forks, food or drinks second hand clothes If you are infected HIV, it will take three to nine months before it shows up in an HIV test. This is called the 'window period'. During this time, the virus can be passed on the others. Having a simple blood test is the only way . Having a simple blood test is the only way .to know if you have been infected with HIV and are HIV positive. An HIV test does not tell you whether you have AIDS. Testing is also the first step to getting medical care, counseling and support if you need it. 2 years The virus affects your immune system. You will start experiencing recurring infections, such as flu, mouth ulcers and pneumonia =======================================
 It looks like the battle of Snoop Dogg vs Snoop Dogg has heated up in a major way. As you know Death Row Records which was Snoop's former label has released an album called 'Dead Man Walking'. It features a number of unreleased songs that were recorded a couple of years back when Snoop was on the label. Death Row CEO Suge Knight put the album out because he felt that the material showcased Snoop while he still hungry and determined to make a mark in the Hip Hop game. Snoop who is now rolling with Master P's No Limit/Priority has been gearing up to release his recently recorded album called 'The Last Meal'. Snoop's camp also issued a warning that any radio station or DJ caught playing any of the cuts from the Dead Man Walking album, would not get any interviews or promotional perks from Snoop or his label.. Death Row has responded with the move of moves. They got a copy of The Last Meal and have put the entire album up in MP3 form on the Death Row site http://www.deathrowrecords2000.com. There is an invitation for visitors to compare the two albums. There is no word as to how Snoop and his camp will respond. It'll be interesting to see how Hillary Rosen's RIAA and others entities who have been running around shutting down sites for the illegal downloading of music will approach Death Row. First Republican Congressmen in a feeble attempt to smear Vice President Al Gore's reputation started suggesting that perhaps he had something to do with the DEA investigations being stopped. They noted that Gore had attended a church which had been given one million dollars by Rap-A-Lot CEO James Prince. Whats so ironic is the fact that Prince who came under fire from Al's wife Tipper Gore would never go out and support him.. It appears that certain political forces are simply reaching for straws. According to Rap-A-Lots people, agents had tried to smear Princes name by letting church members know that he was under investigation and that there were suspicions that he may be a former drug dealer. Next these same forces started raising questions about Maxine Waters involvement.. 'Did she use undue influence and overstep her bounds and illegally interfere with an investigation'? Next what has been described as a misinformation campaign was launched which resulted in disparaging letters maligning Rap-A-Lot, and Maxine Waters being sent to Texas newspapers and conservative talk shows. Yesterday the ante was raised when Congress held hearings on the matter. Initially the date for the hearings was scheduled on December 6. But suddenly it was moved up to Monday November 27. No one from Rap-A-Lot was invited to speak. Nor was Congresswoman Waters. The people on board were cops and DEA agents.. This of course raised suspicions and made it look like a politically motivated attempt to both intimidate and discredit certain people. While this was going on the Washington Post of all people did a review of Scarface's album and accused of him of being paranoid for writing the song Look Me In My Eyes. That of course was a cheap shot and totally overlooks some troubling issues that have been going on in Scarface's world. First, his best friend and former body guard was shot to death in the back by Shreveport police about 8-10 years ago. There was a robbery and the police storm trooped into a hamburger place where Scarface and his crew were at. They saw the bodyguard was strapped and they overreacted shooting both him and Scarface. Second, almost from the day Rap-A-Lot was founded there has been consistent police attention given to the label. They came underfire when someone tried to sue and say it was lyrics from a song that caused a young man to commit murder. They came under fire when they depicted Houston police officers beating on Black people in the song 'Crooked Officer'. On another occasion a friend turned/ FBI informant showed up at Scarface' s house attempting to buy weed. H e was insistent and reported face to the feds when he gave his boy a joint.. Today all of us should take some time out to acknowledge what is now the 13th annual World AIDS Day. With more then 34 million people either infected with the dreaded HIV virus or suffering from full blown AIDS, the deadly impact of this disease should be sobering. Currently AIDS is one of the leading causes of death among those who are part of the Hip Hop generation. Within the African American community it is the number one cause of death for those under 30. The fastest growing population contracting the disease are women..with sistas making up a whooping 63%. here in Oakland and surrounding Alameda county the rate of infection has gotten so bad that last year a state of emergency was declared. We haven't even spoken about the devastation it has been causing on the continent of Africa.
Here in the Bay Area, Michael Franti of Spearhead recorded a song a few years back called 'Positive' which was adapted by radio stations around the country to bring attention to World AIDS Day. Dwayne Wiggins of Toni Tone Tony help found a project started by some ambitious poets called the Punany Project Hip Hop Psalms. It was a book of safe sex poems and it featured words of wisdom from all sorts of Bay Area Hip Hop artists. The Punany Poets dedicated and continue to dedicate a lot of time and energy into doing shows to help spread the word about AIDS and HIV prevention.. All in all with all the activities and projects, it seemed like the Hip Hop community would be among the most informed about this disease..
Is it This? Or That? The Choice is yours.. The lyrics to this classic Hip Hop song must be swirling around Eminem's head as he ponders a no win offer that was recently offered by Macomb County Michigan district attorneys. As you may recall Em has been brought up on charges of carrying a concealed weapon and assault with a dangerous weapon. Prosecutors have offered to drop one of the felony charges against Eminem if he agrees to plead guilty to the other count. Sounds like a great deal except for one thing.. The prosecutors will be asking for Eminem to get at least 6- 9 months jail time. Should Em plead 'not guilty', go to trial and lose, Eminem could receive up to 5 years prison time.. Is it this or That? Em's lawyers are saying any sort of jail time is way to much. It appears that the prosecutors are trying to make an example out of him.However, Macomb authorities are saying that Em is being offered the same choices that any other first time offender would be given..What should Eminem do at this stage of the game..Fight the gun charges and risk going to prison for 5 years or plead guilty and do 6-9 months. Should he do this, he could be sentenced as early as next week..hit me up at 
Well it was bound to happen.. Hip Hop zaniest character ODB was apprehended by police in Philadelphia yesterday [Monday] afternoon. As was predicted ODB managed to do something that would attract undue attention onto himself. He went to McDonalds and attracted a huge crowd of fans and well wisherrs who were out seeking autographs. The manager of Mc Donalds noticed all the commotion but had no idea as to the man causing all the ruckus. He feared something bad would break out and hence he called the police. Once the police arrived they realized they were face to face with Hip Hop's Most Wanted..According to published reports, ODB thought the police were also on hand to seek autographs. He walked on over to them and then realized they were about to arrest him. He attempted to escape by bolting into his car, but was quickly caught. He is now awaiting extradition to either New York or California.Oh well I guess thats too bad..Apparently you can be arrested for minor crimes even when you cross state lines..It was a rare and lucky opportunity for cats who attended last weeks Wu-Tang listening party and manged to catch a glimsp of ODB. It looks like he might not be hanging on stage for a while now..
Looks like things are going to get real interesting for Scarface, Rap-A-Lot Records, Congresswoman Maxine Waters and Vice President Al Gore. A few weeks back we told you how Scarface had come under fire for dissing DEA agents in a song off his latest album called 'Look Me In My Eyes'. FYI, That record is the newest single. It was in response to 12 years of continuous yet fruitless federal investigation to the upstart Houston based label. This resulted in Rap-A-Lot CEO James Prince reaching out to Congresswoman Maxine Waters for help. He felt like he and his label were prey to high level racial profiling and police harassment. Waters went down to Texas and was impressed with all the community work James Prince had done in the community. She wrote a letter to US Attorney General Janet Reno asking her to look into the issues that were raised by Prince and Rap-A-Lot. To make a long story short, the Federal investigations were stopped and the lead DEA agent Jack Schaumacher who a healthy list of complaints as well six killings under his belt was demoted. This set off a war of sorts..
