Voter Education and Political Links

*Voting is Power*
It's your meal ticket to the political table ..
where important decisions are made!

Far too often we get discouraged and turned off by politics and so we don't bother to register or show up to the polls. The end result for the past 25 years has been less than 50% of the voting public determining the politics of this country. This is part of the game. For many politicians the feeling is the less people who vote the better. If you don't vote elected officials DO NOT have to deal with you. They DO NOT have to address your needs and concerns. They will only answer to those who got in the game.

For example, in Oakland's last Mayoral election less then 30% of the population voted..The numbers were even lower in the African American and Latino communities.. Since that last election, rents in Oakland have gone up. Evictions have increased and the police have been cracking down. Many young people complain about not having much to do in 'the town'. The sad part to this scenario is that many of the people who didn't vote are complaining the loudest. They are also the ones who are being the hardest hit.

Things could've been a lot different had they bothered to participate. The people who were elected into office saw the large number of people who didn't vote and concluded that since they weren't voting they really didn't care about the decisions being made. When budgets are being made and crucial programs and policies are being decided upon, elected officials look first to those who came to the table and either voted or contributed to their campaign.
