First things first.. I know I know.. Im eating crow, literally after the Oakland Raiders stunning loss to the Baltimore Ravens. The entire overall scenario was bad.. Simply put Baltimores defense was on hit and we didnt show up.. Some behind the scenes observations.. A big WACK Award to Andre Rison and Charles Woodson.. I love these guys, but on Friday Night, they called up the station in the wee hours of the morning-drunk
For those who dont know, Rison and Woodson promote night clubs and parties on the side and Friday night saw them doing their thing..I have no problem with cats getting their hustle on as long as you do the job at hand.. As you know both players messed up at crucial moments in the game.. They werent sharp and altogether there.. I cant help but wonder if the all night partying last Friday night had an effect.. I think it did.. and as a result I have to cancel my ticket to Tampa
I hate to do it but a big WACK Award has to go to a weak half time performance from Run minus DMC.. What was up with that.?? In all my years I have never seen Run DMC come up short.. But this Sunday was horrible.. Where was DMC? And why was the lead singer from Third Eye Blind playing DMCs role? The sound was terrible.. and there was no energy whatsoever..I admit I was excited when I initially heard Run DMC was gonna do the half time show.. But his performance didnt fit well with the Oakland crowd, especially when Too Short, Ice Cube, Hammer, Richie Rich, E-40, B-Legit, Digital Underground and a host of other Bay Area and West Coast acts were in attendance. I dont know why the NFL didnt let those cats get on stage and let loose. Oh well, Im just venting
In other news, I got a chance to hang out with DJ Q-Bert this weekend peep out the Hughes Brothers documentary on Scratching which features him and the Invisible Skratch Piklz among others. In case you dont know, this movie will be shown at the Sundance film festival. The documentary was good. It provided a lot of keen insight into the world of scratching and turntablism. However, there were some glaring omissions. There was no mention or showing of Philly cats like DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Cash Money or Spinbad. There was also no mention of key west coast DJs like Joe Cooley, Tony G and the KDAY Mixmasters. Q-Bert was also aware of the omissions, but pointed out this was not his documentary. Hes just featured in it. I strongly urged that before they show this film, the producers put a disclaimer in beginning and end of the film. The concern I had is that folks who have never been exposed to Hip Hop and scratching in particular, will see this excellent film and come away thinking that the entire story had been told.. Its important that viewers know there are key figures that have had major impact on the art of scratching and turntablism who werent shown or mentioned. To not have guys like Cash Money, Jazzy Jeff or Joe Cooley in a documentary on scratching is like me doing a documentary on basketball and not including Larry Bird, Julius Erving or Kareem Abdul Jabbar. A simple note and acknowledgement can go a long way in preventing the misperceptions..I did get a chance to see part of Q-Berts animated film Wave Twisters
That was a dope.. and very innovative.. I wish him much luck at Sundance..

Pet Peeves of the day:
Submitted by William Josh..
When at a concert an MC kicks a tight freestyle, making everyone think that it was off the top of the
dome, and then hearing them spit the exact same thing at their next show.

This is more true for the underground, but in general, ever since Common came out with "I used to love her" emcees have been trying to duplicate that love metaphor for Hip Hop and have failed miserably. So my pet peeve this week is emcees who try to fool you in the song title to think that they're talking about love for an individual or whatever...then when you hear the first verse, it's about they're little rap career or some bullshit like that. I'd actually be surprised now if the record was about a lover, family or friends...
