First Things First
Today we wanna kick things off by righting some wrongs
I got an email from my good buddy Chuck D about the Black Album
He noted that hes not working on an album at least not in the way traditional albums are done..
He explained; "I just dont necessary believe in the industry sanctioned, contractual required 12 song album...maybe a DOORS like 7 cut piece or hot buttered soul like 4 cut lp with some 10 minute plus track..gradually doing 1 cut at a time..." He concluded by noting " with thousands of groups majors, indies and inties i feel enjoyment outta checkin out new talent....people ask me all the time 'you in the studio?' when i got 4 digital studios always working...the gap between those that really know how this biz operates and the general public is so wide its kills me. I am completely creating with no clock or obligation. Artist feel is where Im at presently and Im cool with that..." Sorry folks I goofed
Will The Real DJ Swift Please Stand Up..
The other thing to clear up took place more then a year ago
Folks may recall the untimely and unfortunate death of a Philadelphia DJ named Brian Perkins who used the name DJ Swift
who worked at WPHI.. At the time it shook me, because I recall meeting a DJ Swift when he came to the Bay Area to perform with Rahzel.. Shortly after running the story I got a call from DJ Swift
aka Kid Swift.. Apparently Philly had two well known DJs using the name Swift
The Swift who was killed was not the Swift that I had met...Adding to the confusion was the fact that the Swift I had met was actually out of town during the time of Perkins death, hence it was easy for folks to think as I did..
After hearing from Swift, we ran story about the confusion
Unfortunately Kid Swift is still running into cats who think hes supposed to be dead and wanted to clear the air
"There was a lot of confusion around the time of the unfortunate death of Brian. My real name isn't Brian, but allow me to say that it is very upsetting to me when I'm being stopped in the street even by radio personalities in the same city, saying I thought you were dead", he wrote. Swift also went on to add that this wasnt the first time it had been erroneously reported that he he had died
A similar fate befell him 10 years ago it was thought he had perished in a car accident.. He attributed the confusion to people having similar names
"The other side of the coin is the issue of people using my name. I've been DJing for 20 years and have proven myself to be one of the best DJ's to even come from Philly and then someone after all the DJ battles I've won use my name. Do you want to know something funny, this is not the first time that I've had to go through this whole thing. About 10 years ago someone announced that I died in some car accident on Power 99 fm. When the other stations heard the news they reported the same thing. Now at that time in the same way my neighbors haven't seen me in a few days and started to call my house, so did countless other people. I never got mad like I could have with GOOD reason to do so, but the time it takes to contact friends and family and fellow performers it can be annoying!! This is why I'm never a fan of those who use a similar name to break in the business cause during an unfortunate time, such as this one, confusion can make a bad situation even worse!"
Kid Swift noted that we shouldnt lose sight of the fact that someone was indeed killed and a family lost a loved one.. Hopefully this helps set the matter straight once and for all.. There were two DJ Swifts in Philly.. The one we know as Kid Swift is alive and well. And hopefully with us for a long time to come
Detroit Radio Sation Still Under Fire...
In other news.. folks in the Motor City Detroit have been turning up the heat with their boycott of WJLB.. They plan to have weekly protests of the radio station
What will be interesting is how local artist like Eminem respond to the protest.. Recently Em was praised for donating money to one of the stations charity drives..
Heres the letter I received from organizers
January 21, 2001 7:00pm Detroit, MI
On January 19, 2001, Approximately 100 members and supporters of the Detroit Hip-Hop Coalition, a collective that represents over 4000 metro Detroit Hip-Hop artists/groups, DJ's, retailers and Dancers staged a boisterous, but Peaceful Protest outside of WJLB FM 98. This Protest/Boycott stems from "Community outrage" over the top-rated station's adamant refusal to give airplay to top independent area artists.
Spearheaded by the Detroit Hip-Hop Coalition, a multicultural organization designed to unify the Detroit Hip-Hop Community, the protest was bolstered by Local, National, and even International support. Hip-Hop Artist/Activist and RapStation.com owner Chuck D, of Public Enemy contacted and met with members of the Coalition discussing various strategies on the eve of the protest.
Tensions flared between the Community and the "Corporation" as Protesters marched and chanted while distributing literature. WJLB's phone lines were jammed with Protest supporters, prompting WJLB operators to cease answering.
WJLB which bills itself as "the voice and conscience of the community" refused to meet with DHHC representatives and ordered the delegation out of the building after efforts were made to intimidate them.
DHHC delegation member Brandon Wilkins had this to say after being "escorted" out of the building. "It's a shame that a station that calls itself the voice of the community treats members of the community in this fashion. There was no reason to surround us with security and not allow us to present our grievances. It's unfortunate, however it only strengthens our resolve."
The DHHC has declared each Friday "BLACK-OUT FRIDAYS" and requests all members and supporters to turn off the station on Fridays and also to call their telephone lines (313) 965-2000 and (313) 298-7908 and request area artists.
Added Coalition member Lee Martin, "The same 10-12 songs, All Day Long, has got to Stop. This station takes us for granted. Detroit made it #1, Detroit can just as easily make it #101."
"For years WJLB has neglected artists from the communty. These same artists that helped to make them #1 are now stepping up and joining the DHHC." said coalition Member Rob Gill
